HOW IT WORKS

In a brake system, the hydraulic fluid, commonly known as brake fluid, is pressurized by the master cylinder when you press the brake pedal. This pressurized fluid flows through the brake lines to cylinders located near the brakes on each wheel. There are two main types of brake systems: disc brakes and drum brakes.

Disc brakes are the most common type and consist of a rotor, a caliper, and a pad. When you depress the brake pedal, the hydraulic fluid travels through the lines, causing the caliper to squeeze the pad against the rotor. The friction between the pad and the rotor slows down the vehicle. On the other hand, drum brakes operate using a slightly different system.

Drum brakes are made up of a brake drum and brake shoes. When you apply the brake pedal, a cylinder pushes the brake shoes with brake linings against the inner surface of the brake drum. This contact generates friction, which leads to the vehicle slowing down.

HOW OFTEN

If you notice unusual noises or unusual stopping behavior while braking, it is important to have your brakes inspected promptly. However, even in the absence of such symptoms, it is generally advised to include brake inspections as part of regular tire rotations, typically recommended by most manufacturers to be done once or twice a year. By following this maintenance schedule, you can help ensure the optimal performance and safety of your vehicle's braking system.
